PICOSURE PRO

PicoSure Pro by Cynosure

Picosecond lasers, like the PicoSure Pro, are non-ablative lasers that are used for reduction of pigmentation, acne scars, skin rejuvenation, skin brightening and tattoo removal.

They have the ability to generate consistently high energy levels even when using large treatment spot sizes such that they can treat pigmentation issues. When the picosecond pulses are delivered, it creates a photoacoustic effect to blast pigment into a ‘dust’ which is subsequently much easier for the body’s immune system to eliminate, gradually removing pigment issues in the prescribed number of sessions.

The shorter pulse duration also means that the skin heats up less and this reduces the risk of hyper-pigmentation which can sometimes form due to laser procedures.

How Does it work?

When the laser light is absorbed by the pigmented lesions, the light will vibrate, fragmenting the pigment particles into a really thin “dust” thus breaking up melanin and pigment particles in “picosecond” pulses.

The laser pulses generate a pure photoacoustic effect which targets the pigments without affecting the surrounding tissues. These fragmented pigments are then removed by the skin’s immune system.

Most patients describe the laser feeling like tiny warm pricks on the skin.

Is there any pain or downtime?

Laser-toning for skin rejuvenation and brightening with the PicoSure Pro generally involves  minimal downtime. However, the doctor may use more aggressive settings for pigment removal treatment for pigmentation issues or tattoos. In such situations, it is common to have mild swelling and redness on the skin surrounding the tattoo or pigmented lesions, but this generally subsides after 30-60 minutes.
