Juvederm MD Codes – The Newest Approach to Facial Aesthetics

Facial volume loss contributes significantly to facial ageing. Volume deficits are a result of the loss and repositioning of facial fat as well as from skeleton remodelling. By looking for facial shadows and depressions when accessing a patient, it is possible to help identify where this volume has been lost.

Gone are the days when fillers are all about just injecting hyaluronic acid into your face based on the Golden Ratio. Doctors have taken a new approach to facial aesthetics called the Juvederm MD Codes – the MD Codes allows for tailor-made treatments which take into account understanding real patient motivations and how they feel. In short, combining patient perspective with expert opinion.

We sit down with one of the few doctors in Singapore to be equipped with this latest technique, Dr Calvin Chan, Medical Director of Calvin Chan Aesthetic & Laser Clinic,   to tell us everything about taking customisation to the next level.

What is Juvederm MD Codes?

Juvederm MD Codes is based on an emotional chart with 8 messages divided into 2 groups.

Four of the messages are considered the downgrading features: the saggy appearance, the tired look, the angry look and the sad message of the face.

The other four messages are considered the positive ones: attractiveness, youthfulness, more contoured facial shape and the feminine look.

Utilizing the new Juvederm VYCROSS collection of hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers for facial rejuvenation and shaping, the procedure, developed by Dr Mauricio de Maio, is delivered in 8 distinct treatment areas to achieve the most natural result and maintain each patient’s unique facial expressions.

The procedure recommends a sequence of injection and specific sites that should be adapted based on each patient’s profile to achieve the optimal outcome.

Using the MD Codes, I am able to target the underlying cause of aging that can mar facial expressions as we age, making patients look angry, tired or sad. These targeted injection points help treat sagging skin, loss of volume and deep wrinkle issues, giving patients back a refreshed, happy, relaxed and youthful appearance.

Why is Juvederm MD Codes so unique?

  1. Technique – A deepened understanding of facial anatomy coupled with extensive training and an eye for aesthetics, enables me to present a precise approach to analyse and treat my patient’s face.

  2. Products – The products in the VYCROSS® Collection are manufactured using Allergan’s proprietary VYCROSS technology – cross-linking the hyaluronic acid molecules to create a smoother, more efficient filler that allows for a lower concentration of hyaluronic acid to be used. Many hyaluronic acid fillers use 100% high molecular weight, while the VYCROSS Collection uses 10% high molecular weight HA with 90% low molecular weight HA, creating a smoother filler with smoother results. A smoother filler means that my patients are less likely to experience pain and swelling/after treatment, and results are long-lasting and natural.

  3. Customisation – The procedure is a bespoke treatment that depends on an individual’s features. It takes someone with extensive training and an artistic eye.

How would I know if this procedure is right for me

If you are over the age of 35, especially if you have started to notice your face dropping or sagging, it is likely that you will be a good candidate for this technique.  If you have more severe laxity, a good result is still possible, but more filler and possibly some different techniques may be required for best results.

Is the treatment painful?

There is minimal discomfort during the treatment. The new generation of dermal fillers contain a numbing local anaesthetic, which makes the procedure relatively painless. Your doctor may use ice probes or apply a local anaesthetic to numb the treated area. With any injectable treatment, there can be some slight bruising or swelling that accompanies it. This should not persist much longer than a day, and is easily coverable with make-up.

What parts of the face can be treated?

  • Cheeks are lifted, enhancing the cheekbones and lifting the nasolabial folds, reducing the worn-out appearance.
  • Treats the nasolabial fold and corners of the mouth.
  • Improves the appearance of marionette lines
  • Helps to improve the appearance of jowls
  • Reshapes and lifts the jawline
