10 Top Questions About Fat Freezing, Answered
Does fat freezing work? What happens during the process? When it comes to body slimming or sculpting, the fat freezing option has become one that more people are considering. Here are the top 10 questions about fat freezing, answered by Dr Calvin Chan.
1. How exactly does fat freezing work?
For fat freezing, our clinic uses CoolSculpting, an FDA-approved machine for freezing fat. The CoolSculpting process causes permanent death to the targeted fat cells, which then break down and naturally leave the body. This does not damage the skin and other vital tissues surrounding the treated area.
During the CoolSculpting procedure:
- A vacuum applicator is placed on the area of fat to bring it into closer contact with cooling panels. Patient might feel tugging or pinching sensation due to the suction.
- Patients feel a cold sensation for a few minutes, as it produces an anesthetic effect (previous mention of tugging or pinching will lessen).
- The fat is cooled at -11 degree celsius for about 35 minutes (with CoolAdvantage applicators)
- The full fat loss and body sculpting effect takes several months to be seen as cell death will occur in the treated adipose, which will be eliminated naturally by the human body through its own lymphatic system. Dramatic results are expected on the 8th week and onwards.
2. Where is the best place to go to get fat freezing done?
Many clinics offer fat freezing services. However, when considering fat freezing for fat reduction and body contouring, a practice’s clinical reputation, record of patient satisfaction and the machine that is used are three key factors.
We only use CoolSculpting at Calvin Chan Aesthetic & Laser Clinic because it is the first-to-market fat freezing machine and it is also considered the gold standard in this category. Other fat freezing machines include Zimmer Lipo, Coltech, Lipo Cryo, we cannot comment on the safety and efficacy of these machines. There have been cases of unsafe imitation machines which are not proven for safety and effectiveness and may result in frost bites or burns. This is why we only use CoolSculpting.
CoolSculpting is a technique dependent procedure and the certification ensures that each patient will receive the optimal treatment.
Last year, our practice achieved “Cool Club 1,000” status from CoolSculpting, signifying that we successfully performed over 1,000 treatments. This high volume of treatments also built up practical knowledge and honed our expertise in CoolSculpting at Calvin Chan Aesthetic & Laser Clinic.
3. Which parts of the body does fat freezing work best on?
In my experience, Coolsculpting done on the tummy and flanks respond better to cryolipolysis compared to double chin, arms and thighs area. This is due to the distribution and type of fat in different areas of the body.
4. What are the pros of fat freezing?
With Coolsculpting and CoolAdvantage, there is no downtime and minimal discomfort, it is also a non surgical procedure that is less likely to produce uneveness compared to liposuction, which can result in a dimpled effect.
5. What are the cons?
It can be expensive for treating large amounts or areas of fat. Our CoolSculpting treatment costs $500 per area treated. The machine treats an area slightly larger than an iPhone each time.
6. What are possible complications from fat freezing?
Possible complications include pain, swelling and bruising of the treated area but these are self limiting, usually resolving in a couple of days. The arms usually bruise more easily but it depends on individual response.
One possible but rare adverse effect is Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia. In this condition, the treated area becomes larger and the fats hardened in the weeks after the procedure, leaving a “painless, visibly enlarged, firm, well-demarcated mass” under the skin. I haven’t seen such a case before but the literature on it suggests that a follow up liposuction procedure can resolve it well.
7. What differences can a skilled doctor make to the procedure and the outcome?
Having had many years VaserLipo experience, I find that using CoolSculpting I am able to achieve excellent results with less risk of undulations/uneveness/lumpiness. My previous training in liposuction helps me to conduct better fat assessment for patients, which results in improved results in sculpting the body.
8. Are there patients who are not suited for fat freezing?
Anyone who wants to undergo cryolipolysis must be in good health, have a normal renal functioning, and no medical history pertaining to neurological and orthopedic problems. Patients suffering from cold-induced conditions which include cryoglobulinemia, cold urticaria, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria should also skip this type of treatment. Cryolipolysis should also be avoided on skin surfaces with dermatitis, varicose veins, and other lesions.
9. How often must it be done to maintain the results?
The destruction of fat cells from CoolSculpting is permanent. But if you put on weight, existing fat cells can expand to “fill the space” and leave you in the same state as pre-treatment. If and when that happens you might want to have another session of CoolSculpting done.
10. What is new with CoolSculpting?
The CoolSculpting brand has recently rolled out improvements in the form of the CoolAdvantage applicators. These new applicators cut treatment time to 35 minutes, down from 1 hour previously. The handpiece is also slightly bigger so a bigger area can be treated, plus the procedure is also more comfortable for patients. We also offer DualSculpting as we have two machines so two applicators can be applied to two different areas of the body at the same time to speed up the overall body contouring process.
